Each year hundreds of people from across the country gather on the Sunday of the June long weekend to commemorate the unprovoked massacre of twenty-eight Wirrayaraay women, children and old men by a group of stockmen on Myall Creek Station in 1838. This year marks the 180th anniversary of this horrific event.

The Myall Creek Memorial on the Bingara-Delungra Road near Inverell, was erected in June 2000 by a group of Aboriginal and non-indigenous people working together in an act of reconciliation.

“The annual remembrance of the massacre of Aboriginal children, women and elderly men at Myall Creek is always a significant opportunity for truth telling about our shared histories. This is only emphasised by this being the 180th Anniversary,” said Paul Lynch, Shadow Attorney General.

“These events are an important parts of our collective history. Acknowledging the truth of the many frontier massacres is a necessary part of any effective reconciliation.”

“Truth-telling was also one of the key points of the Uluru Statement, which emphasises how important it is and how important commemorations such as this are.”

“Certainly acknowledging the events of the past is also important in developing a process for a treaty. It is also a step on a collective path to overcome Aboriginal disadvantage.”

The commemoration is of the 1838 unprovoked massacres of 28 Aboriginal children, women and elderly men. The killings were perpetrated by European stockmen. Prosecutions were brought against a number of the perpetrators, some of whom were executed. Mr Lynch as NSW Minister for Aboriginal Affairs 2007 – 11, has attended the remembrance ceremony since 2007.

The annual memorial service is open to everyone. Those intending to participate are invited to gather at the Myall Creek Hall by 9.30am Sunday 10 June for morning tea.
